Keep the answer simple...

ciarajones9

I had to fill out a form this week asking me what my worries were for Cormac's future and equally, what my aspirations were for his future.

Initially I thought OMG, my answers here could go on forever...! Then I paused and reflected, as I have done many times over the years, when very well-meaning people have suggested to me I must 'really worry' for Cormac's future. In a nutshell, I do not worry for Cormac's future. None of us can tell the future. Sure, I try to imagine how things will pan out...Cormac is now 21. Lots of other youngsters of his age will be now graduating from colleges, be actively employed, perhaps be lucky enough to be following their dreams. And that is absolutely fine. I am truly so very happy for all those youngsters.

However, the further I travel on this adventure with Cormac, the more I realise that really there are SO many ways to live a very full life. Indeed, some of the most unconventional ways of doing so can be so much fun and so rewarding for all involved.

Cormac lives a very full life on a daily basis. He goes out to his college, where he works hard every day on being as independent as he can be. He also works very hard on learning how to communicate effectively with others, with minimal spoken words. What a powerful skill to have! He also swims, he goes horse-riding, he listens to a highly eclectic range of music (not necessarily to my taste), he has a go at playing the drums, he dances in his style and doesn't care what other folk think of his style, he goes for long bike rides both at home and abroad on his tandem bike with his Dad, he goes to see a Dolly Parton tribute night, he goes to see the last night of the athletics at the Paris Olympics and is somewhat bemused by the behaviours of others in the crowd; the shouting, the clapping, the jumping up and down (sounds like 'autistic' behaviour perhaps?!). Then Cormac relaxes, he chills, he hugs those closest to him with a look of appreciation as if to say, this is good, this is living life Mum....let's just keep doing this, and go and tell the world today what you filled out in that form....

Worries: none.

Aspirations: to keep going out and engaging with the world every day, following my interests, my specialities and hopefully helping to bring a bit of joy and recognition of all our differences to some nice folk along the way (that happens very regularly).

Form sent off, on we go with living life...
